World War III prophecies: where these claims come from

What the prophecy says

There is no single World War III prophecy. What circulates is a World War 3 prophecy list, reshuffled whenever a crisis fills the news, and most versions draw on the same five sources. Taking them one at a time is the only way to answer whether any world war 3 prophecy is real, or came true.

Nostradamus. A verse in his Prophéties, VI.24, foretells a “calamitous War” under Cancer when Mars and the sceptre are joined, after which a new king brings a long peace.

The Pike letter. A letter said to have been sent on 15 August 1871 by the American general Albert Pike to the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Mazzini is credited with a plan for three world wars, the third between political Zionism and the Muslim world.

Baba Vanga. The Bulgarian mystic, who died in 1996, is said to have predicted that four heads of state would be assassinated in 2010, leading to a third world war. Newer lists move the war to 2026.

The 9/11 email. A “Nostradamus” verse that circulated after the attacks included the line “The third big war will begin when the big city is burning.”

Kushal Kumar. An astrologer from Panchkula, India, wrote that a third world war, or something like it, was likely in 2024, naming 10, 18 and 29 June, with 18 June the strongest.

Where it first appeared

The Nostradamus verse names no year. In the 1672 English edition it reads “Mars & le Sceptre se trouvera conjoint, / Dessoubs Cancer calamiteuse guerre”, and the translator took the sceptre to be a constellation. The date came later: some astrologers tied the line to an alignment of Jupiter and Mars on 21 June 2002, according to Sky HISTORY.

The three-wars plan is spelled out in Pawns in the Game, a 1958 book by William Guy Carr, and read closely it is not a quotation from Pike at all. Carr describes, in his own words, a blueprint he says Pike worked out between 1859 and 1871: a first war to overthrow the Tsars, a second between fascists and political Zionists, a third between political Zionists and the leaders of the Muslim world. The passage Carr quotes as Pike’s own words from the 1871 letter describes a coming social cataclysm and does not mention a world war. Carr said he took it from a letter catalogued in the British Museum Library in London.

Baba Vanga left no prophecies on paper, according to her niece, whom Balkan Insight calls the most reliable source on her life. Sky HISTORY notes that most of what is attributed to her comes from second-hand accounts, and that her predictions became popular after the events.

The “third big war” line is not by Nostradamus, though accounts differ on who wrote it. The Museum of Hoaxes traces the email’s first four lines to an article by a college student, Neil Marshall, who was debunking Nostradamus, and says the remaining lines, this one among them, appear to have been added after the attacks by an anonymous prankster. NBC News quotes a shorter version that ends with this line and says it came from an essay on a Canadian website about how easily an important-sounding prophecy can be created from vague imagery. The Skeptic’s Dictionary dates Marshall’s essay to 1997, so either way the line was written in 1997 or later.

Kushal Kumar says he works from Vedic astrology. His dates appeared in a post on Medium, which Outlook India reported on 24 May 2024.

How the date spread

Each claim travelled on borrowed authority or on the news of the day. Carr’s rested on a library catalogue, and another of his books, Satan, Prince of This World, shows the weak point. Its text repeats that the letter is catalogued in the British Museum, citing a Chilean cardinal who said so in 1925. A footnote then reports that the Keeper of Manuscripts had recently told Carr the letter is not catalogued there.

The 9/11 email spread by forwarding. For a short time after the attacks, the Museum of Hoaxes records, Nostradamus was the most popular search term on the major search engines.

Baba Vanga lists are recycled from year to year. In January 2026 Gulf News described a claim that she had foreseen World War III in 2026 gaining traction on TikTok, X and YouTube, shared alongside headlines about Venezuela, Iran and Greenland; the paper traced it to a New York Post report and called its sources unverifiable. Balkan Insight found Albanian television channels translating such prophecies from the UK’s Daily Mail.

Kumar’s dates spread the same way. Outlook India said his prediction had gone viral on social media, and set it against the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and tension between the United States and China.

What happened on the day

21 June 2002 passed without the calamitous war, as Sky HISTORY notes.

2010 passed without the four assassinations or a world war. Sky HISTORY lists it among Baba Vanga’s failed predictions, and Gulf News counts it among her notable misses.

10, 18 and 29 June 2024 each passed without a world war.

As for the 1871 letter, Carr himself wrote that it was not catalogued where he had said it was.

The “third big war” line dates from 1997 or later, and no third world war followed the attacks of 11 September 2001.

The 2026 version was still open when this file was written. Like the 2010 version, it rests on sources that Gulf News called unverifiable.

Verdict

Is a world war 3 prophecy real? As a claim people make, yes; as foresight, nothing on this list holds up. Did any world war 3 prophecy come true? None on this list did. Every dated prediction whose date has passed failed, and the undated ones fail on their sources: the Nostradamus verse was given a year by later astrologers, the Pike letter’s promoter was told it was not in the catalogue he cited, the 9/11 line was written in 1997 or later, and Baba Vanga left nothing on paper.

A World War III prophecy is a current fear attached to a famous name, which is why each new crisis brings the same list back with new dates. Real or Legend files these prophecies as did not happen.
