Is Eyeless Jack real? The creepypasta's origin, explained
No. Eyeless Jack is a character from internet horror fiction. The picture came first, drawn for DeviantArt in November 2009, and the kidney-eating story was written around it by a Creepypasta Wiki user in February 2012. The author later asked for the story to be taken down, and no real case lies behind it.
What the Eyeless Jack legend says
The Eyeless Jack story is short, and it is told in the first person. A man called Mitch loses his house to foreclosure and moves in with his brother, Edwin. A week later he hears rustling outside at night and puts it down to a raccoon. The next night he thinks he hears his window open and something land in the room. In the morning his brother drops his coffee cup at the sight of him: there is a long gash on Mitch's cheek. At the hospital the doctor finds a neatly stitched incision in his side and tells him that his left kidney is gone.
The following night Mitch wakes to find a figure leaning over him in a black hoodie and a dark blue mask with no nose, no mouth and no eyes, only empty sockets with a black substance running from them. He takes a photo, kicks the creature away and runs into the woods, where he knocks himself out. He wakes in hospital to be told that Edwin has been killed. Collecting his things from the house, he finds something small on the hallway floor next to his brother's body: his own missing kidney, half eaten. That is the whole of the original Eyeless Jack story. There is no backstory, no name beyond the title, and no explanation of what the creature is.
Where it started: the picture, then the story
The Eyeless Jack origin has two parts, and the face came before the fiction. Know Your Meme traces the image to DeviantArt, where on 19 November 2009 a user called nickteezy408, with help from another user, Pirate-Cashoo, posted a picture of an eyeless figure looking down over the edge of a bed. On 7 June 2010 the picture turned up in a forum thread titled Nightmare Fuel, presented as one of a set of disturbing images said to have come from the video-games board of 4chan. For two years it circulated as a creepy picture with no story attached.
The story arrived on 25 February 2012. The Creepypasta Wiki's own page history shows a user named Azelf5000 creating the page Eyeless Jack that day with the opening line in which Mitch introduces himself, then expanding it within twenty minutes to the full text of about 3,100 characters. Know Your Meme gives the same date and the same author. So the answer to who made Eyeless Jack is a wiki user writing under a handle, building a short tale around an image somebody else had drawn. We found no primary source giving the author's real name, so this file does not guess at one.
How the Eyeless Jack creepypasta grew
Narration did much of the work, as it did for most creepypasta of that era. Know Your Meme records a reading of the story uploaded by the YouTube narrator MrCreepyPasta on 17 March 2012, three weeks after the wiki page appeared, which had passed 540,900 views by the time the entry was written. On 9 August 2014 the channel Epic Rap Battle Parodies staged a rap battle between the character and Laughing Jack, another creepypasta character, and that video passed 360,000 views within two months.
The character then outgrew the text. F Newsmagazine, the student paper of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, described in a 2025 history of creepypasta how fans extended the genre's characters through fan art, games, web series and cosplay, and placed them together in a shared house-of-killers setting. The character became one of the regulars in that fan universe, with a hoodie, a blue mask and a taste for kidneys standing in for a personality the original never gave him. The games followed. In April 2024 a developer called tayoDEV released a short 3D horror adaptation of the story on itch.io for Windows, name-your-own-price, which had 326 ratings averaging 4.3 out of 5 when we checked.
Which details hold up, and the removal
The internet history holds up well, because the sites involved keep their own records. The DeviantArt date, the 2010 forum thread and the February 2012 wiki page can all be checked. What the story itself claims cannot: Mitch, Edwin, the hospital and the town are never named beyond first names, and there is no news report, police record or medical case anywhere behind the Eyeless Jack true story, because there was never one. The kidney theft is a plot device, not a crime that happened.
The story's own home has also disowned it. On 21 November 2014 an administrator of the Creepypasta Wiki replaced the page with a notice that the story had been removed from the main site at the request of the original author, and that the page's edit history would be kept so the record stayed visible. A fan wiki adds a reason for the request, but we could not confirm it against anything the author wrote, so this file does not repeat it. The text survives in archived copies of the 2013 page and in countless reposts, which is how most readers meet it now.
Who made Eyeless Jack?
The story was posted on the Creepypasta Wiki on 25 February 2012 by a user with the handle Azelf5000. The image is older: it was drawn for DeviantArt on 19 November 2009 by the user nickteezy408, with help from Pirate-Cashoo.
Is there an Eyeless Jack true story?
No. The story names no town, no date and no real person, and no case of a kidney stolen in the night matches it. It is fiction written around a picture.
Why was Eyeless Jack removed from the Creepypasta Wiki?
The wiki's notice, posted on 21 November 2014, says the story was taken off the main site at the original author's request. It gives no further reason.
Verdict
Eyeless Jack explained in a sentence: a 2009 drawing that became a 2012 wiki story, read aloud on YouTube, rapped about, redrawn by thousands of fans and finally withdrawn by its own author. Nothing in the Eyeless Jack legend points to an event outside the internet. Real or Legend files it as fiction.
