Sonic.exe explained: the creepypasta, the fan games and the real story
No, Sonic.exe is not a real lost game. It is a horror story that a user called JC-the-Hyena posted to the Creepypasta Wiki on 9 August 2011, and every Sonic.exe game since has been an unofficial fan project. Sega never made or released one.
What the story says
It is a first-person horror story, named after a file in it. The narrator, Tom, is a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog. A package arrives from his friend Kyle, whom he has not heard from in two weeks. Inside is a blank CD-R with SONIC.EXE written on it in black marker, and a note urging Tom to destroy it. The handwriting on the disc does not look like Kyle's.
Tom plays it anyway. The game looks like a corrupted version of the early Sonic games, but the playable characters are Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik, and Sonic is the villain. Level by level, the friends are hunted down while Sonic taunts the player through text on the screen, until the game shuts the computer off. In the last scene Tom hears a voice behind him and finds a Sonic plush on his bed that speaks to him: "Try to keep this interesting for me, Tom."
Where it started
The Sonic.exe real story begins on a wiki, not on a disc. Creepypasta.com, which republished the text on 3 September 2013 under the name JC-the-Hyena, notes that it was first posted to the Creepypasta Wiki on 9 August 2011. The German games site GIGA gives the same date. The Daily Dot, looking back at the story in 2017, put its length at about 4,149 words.
According to GIGA, the idea grew out of an edited screenshot of the title screen of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, altered to look sinister. We could not confirm who made that image.
How it grew: the Sonic.exe fan games
When people search for sonic.exe today they usually mean one of two things: the 2011 story, or the many games and mods that borrowed its villain. Both are fan work. The Daily Dot says the story inspired hundreds of drawings of the demonic Sonic on DeviantArt, and that in 2012 a user called MY5TCrimson released a playable version on Game Jolt, built to follow the story. GIGA dates that release to 13 August 2012, and adds that a 2013 Let's Play of it by PewDiePie came close to seven million views in about two months.
The story itself had a rockier time. The Daily Dot reports that Creepypasta Wiki administrators deleted it in January 2014, calling it badly written and full of clichés, and that it was later reinstated. By then the character no longer needed the original text.
The biggest second wave came through a rhythm game. A mod called Friday Night Funkin': Vs. Sonic.Exe was added to the mod site GameBanana on 22 August 2021, credited to RightBurstUltra and a team of collaborators, and pitched as a rap battle for your life against a creepypasta legend. Its page now lists more than 1.9 million downloads, ten years after the story first appeared.
Which details hold up
Is Sonic.exe real? Only as fiction and as fan software. No cursed disc ever circulated, and Tom and Kyle are characters, not people. We found no news report or other record tying the story to a real event, and the original was posted as a creepypasta, a piece of horror fiction, on a site that collects them.
Sega had no part in it. GIGA states that Sega has nothing to do with these horror versions and describes the Sonic.exe games as hobby projects. None of them is an official Sonic release, and we found no sign that Sega has ever licensed one. They are fan-made downloads using characters Sega owns, which also means no publisher stands behind the files.
What is real is the internet history: the 2011 wiki post, the 2012 Game Jolt game, the 2014 deletion and the 2021 mod. That chain is well documented, and it is the actual Sonic.exe true story.
Common questions
Who created it?
A user called JC-the-Hyena is credited with the original story, posted to the Creepypasta Wiki in August 2011. The first well-known game version was released by MY5TCrimson on Game Jolt in 2012.
Is it an official Sega game?
No. Every game under that name is an unofficial fan project. Sega did not make, publish or, as far as we could find, license any of them.
Can you play Sonic.exe?
Fan games and mods exist, including the 2012 Game Jolt version and the 2021 Friday Night Funkin' mod. They are ordinary fan software, not cursed files.
Verdict
Sonic.exe explained in one line: a 2011 horror story about a cursed copy of a Sonic game, which fans then turned into real but unofficial games. The disc in the story never existed, the events never happened, and Sega never made it. The legend is internet fiction that outgrew its source. Real or Legend files it as fiction.
