Is Herobrine real? The Minecraft legend, explained
No. Herobrine has never been in Minecraft. He grew out of a 4chan story and a staged livestream in August 2010, Notch said in 2012 that he has no dead brother, and Mojang has spent years joking "Removed Herobrine" in its update notes.
What the Herobrine legend says
Herobrine is a ghost in Minecraft. In the classic telling he looks like Steve, the game's original default character, except that his eyes are blank white. He haunts single-player worlds, watching from a distance in the fog and vanishing when approached. Players know he has been around by what he leaves behind: neat 2×2 tunnels, small sand pyramids out in the ocean, and trees stripped of their leaves.
The original story adds a cover-up. The narrator tries to post about the sighting on the Minecraft Forum, sees the thread deleted twice, and then receives a one-word private message from a user named Herobrine telling him to stop. Later he is told that Herobrine was the brother of Notch, Minecraft's creator, and the story ends with an email reply from Notch saying he did have a brother, but "he is no longer with us."
Herobrine origin: a 4chan post and a staged stream
The Herobrine origin is unusually well documented, mostly thanks to the editors of the Minecraft Wiki. Their reconstruction starts with an earlier "White Eyes" story, copied from 4chan's /v/ board onto the Minecraft Forum on 31 July 2010, about pale eyes glimpsed in a cave. Over the following weeks that figure became a white-eyed player called Herobrine, and the best-known version, with its foggy screenshot, was posted to 4chan's paranormal board, /x/, on 31 August 2010.
A livestream made it famous. According to the wiki, on 30 August 2010 a streamer called Copeland walked into a room in his world, saw Herobrine standing there, screamed and ended the broadcast. PC Gamer reports that Copeland later admitted to Minecraft Wiki editors that it was a hoax: he had retextured a painting to look like the figure. Another streamer, Patimuss, staged a similar sighting soon after. The recordings were considered lost for years until copies resurfaced on 15 July 2024.
How the legend grew
Herobrine spread the way memes did in 2010: forum threads, edited screenshots and YouTube videos of alleged sightings. Fans also built him into the game themselves. The Minecraft Wiki dates the earliest known Herobrine mod, a server plugin, to 10 December 2010, and notes that mods remain the only way Herobrine can actually appear in Minecraft. PC Gamer adds that his story has even been told in a printed book.
Mojang chose to join the joke rather than fight it. Its official update notes for Beta 1.6.6, posted on 31 May 2011, end with the line "Removed Herobrine." The same line kept turning up for years. It is in the official notes for Java Edition 1.16.2, published on Minecraft.net on 10 August 2020, and the Minecraft Wiki records that it came back with 1.20 after a gap. The notes for Java Edition 26.1, published on 24 March 2026, went one step further and removed a baby version of him.
The legend even produced real detective work. NME reported on 25 January 2021 that the seed-hunting project Minecraft@Home had found the world seed in which the original foggy screenshot was taken, in Java Alpha 1.0.16_02. The Minecraft Wiki notes that a launcher changelog released soon afterwards joked that Herobrine had now been removed from that alpha version too.
Which details hold up
Is Herobrine real? The people in a position to know have said no. PC Gamer quotes a 2012 tweet from Notch: "I don't have a dead brother, and he never was in the game." The Minecraft Wiki also records an automatic email reply Notch used for messages mentioning Herobrine, saying the character had never been part of Minecraft.
The patch-note entries are not evidence either way. They are a running gag: a changelog cannot remove something that was never added, and the line only works because players know the story. As for the sightings, the most famous one was a retextured painting by the streamer's own account, and the Minecraft Wiki says the earlier White Eyes image had the eyes edited into an ordinary cave screenshot.
What is true is the history: a forum story, a 4chan post, a staged stream and a developer that turned the rumour into a long-running joke. That is the Herobrine true story.
Common questions
Did Notch have a brother?
Notch has said publicly that he does not have a dead brother, which is the premise the legend depends on.
Is Herobrine in Minecraft now?
Not in the unmodified game. Herobrine appears only through fan-made mods, which have existed since December 2010.
Why do Minecraft patch notes say "Removed Herobrine"?
It is an in-joke. Mojang's update notes have used the line since Beta 1.6.6 in May 2011, and a variation of it appeared as recently as March 2026.
Verdict
Herobrine explained: a fictional ghost from August 2010, built from a forum story, a 4chan post and a hoax livestream, who has never existed in the unmodified game. Minecraft's creator denied it, the streamer admitted it, and Mojang treats it as a joke. The Herobrine legend is real only as fan fiction and as a mod. Real or Legend files it as fiction.
